Creating Shared Value is a fundamental part of Nestlé's way of doing business that focuses on specific areas of the Company's core business activities where value can best be created both for society and shareholders.

Any business that thinks long-term and follows sound business principles creates value for shareholders and for society through its activities, e.g., in terms of jobs for workers, taxes to support public services, and economic activity in general.

But Creating Shared Value goes one step further. A company consciously identifies areas of focus, where: a) shareholders' interest and society's interest strongly intersect; and b) value creation can be optimized for both. As a result, the company invests resources, both in terms of talent and capital, in those areas where the potential for joint value creation is the greatest, and seeks collaborative action with relevant stakeholders in society.

At Nestlé, we have analyzed our value chain and determined that the areas of greatest potential for joint value optimization with society are Water, Rural Development, and Nutrition. These activities are core to our business strategy and vital to the welfare of the people in the countries where we operate.

We actively seek engagement and partnerships with outside stakeholders that optimize positive impact in these areas of focus. However, Creating Shared Value is not about philanthropy. It is about leveraging core activities and partnerships for the joint benefit of the people in the countries where we operate and of our shareholders.

Neither should Creating Shared Value be confused with compliance or sustainability. Creating Shared Value is built on the foundation of a strong compliance culture and commitment to sustainability. But Creating Shared Value goes beyond compliance and sustainability, and aims to create new and greater value for society and our shareholders within the areas of focus.

In doing so, Nestlé maintains a very long term perspective on business development and welcomes dialogue with external stakeholders who are committed to principled behaviour and constructive engagement. This includes government and regulatory authorities, inter-governmental organizations, non-governmental organizations, academic and professional bodies, and local communities.

At Nestlé Canada, our purpose is to enhance the quality of life and ensure a healthier future for all Canadians and supporting thriving communities starts in our own neighbourhoods. That’s why, we like to direct our charitable and non-profit support toward programs and organizations that focus on increasing access to healthy food, promoting community well-being and improving planetary health.

We work directly with our key charitable partners including Kids Help Phone, United Way, Food Banks Canada, the Grocery Foundation, Canadian Red Cross and the CEE (Centre for Young Black Professionals). Occasionally, we also sponsor additional events or programs that align to our company purpose, as outlined above.

While we receive numerous worthy requests for donations, we are only able to support a limited number that align with our charitable vision and company purpose. If your project or event is related to the above areas, please submit the details to [email protected].

Please ensure you provide up to 8 weeks notice for the request of any product.

Please note: We have a strict Responsible Marketing to Children Policy and cannot participate in any events or programs where children under the age of 12 represent the majority of the audience or participants.

We thank all organizations for their proposals, however only those approved for support will be notified.

How do you support victims during a natural disaster?

Supporting our local and global communities in need is essential during a natural disaster. We share your concerns and work closely with the Canadian Red Cross to provide immediate and effective assistance to those affected by emergency situations during times of crisis. We support the efforts of the Canadian Red Cross and work with them

During times of disasters, we provide support through financial contributions by both the company and employees, as well as through the donation of supplies.

At Nestlé Canada, we know that supporting thriving communities starts in our own neighbourhoods. And that our Nestlé employees are passionate and eager to do more in the communities where they live and work. As the world’s largest food and beverage company, we want to be recognized as a force of good in the communities that we do business.

Nestlé Cares

More than 3,700 employees strong across Canada, we have the power to enhance quality of life for everyone, today and for generations to come. Our strategic focus areas for Nestlé Cares are access to healthy food, community well-being and planetary health. Our key charitable partners (Food Banks Canada, Kids Help Phone, The Grocery Foundation, Red Cross and CEE) are the windows to help us connect with the right people and community groups to truly make a difference.

COVID-19 Response

In the beginning of the pandemic, we have donated over $10M in product and monetary support to our communities, including all of our major partners. Highlights include:

  • Nestlé Purina PetCare Canada supported pets and the people who love them, dedicating resources to shelters and rescues across the country. Nestlé Purina PetCare Canada has donated more than 200,000 meals to shelter and rescue pets in need to ensure animals waiting for their forever homes are well fed.
  • Nestlé Professional along with Nestlé’s Confectionery and Beverages teams are supporting Torontonians by donating over $2 million dollars’ worth of food products to "Bringing TO Back to its Feet," a Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment initiative.
  • Support of Food Banks Canada, our national partner, with over $190K in monetary support and over $500k in product donations. Food banks are on the frontlines doing critical work ensuring that all Canadians can access food. They are facing funding shortages and a loss of volunteers that they desperately rely on due to social distancing guidelines
  • Support for the Canadian Red Cross – with over $20k donated through employee matching and corporate funds to support the organization during key moments of crisis support across Canada (in particular, British Columbia)
  • Support to local community groups and shelters – valued at over $920K

Nestlé Cares Volunteer Week

Nestlé Cares is all about the power of our people to make a difference. It’s volunteers around the country serving in their communities. It’s programs that help children and youth in need and passionate employees who act as mentors. It’s donations from our beloved brands to food banks and shelters across the country. And, it’s being there for disaster relief when it’s needed the most.

In 2021, Nestlé Canada will participate in a Global program to educate and build awareness among employees on food waste and recycling and invite them to participate in several activations in honour of World Food Day on October 16.

We want to make a difference

Nestlé Canada is committed to enhancing the communities in which we live and work. Our Good Food, Good Life philosophy extends beyond the products we make - it also guides the way we do business. We're proud of our deep community involvement and many partnerships.

Good Food, Good Life Community Program

Nestlé Canada's Good Food, Good Life Community Program encourages and supports the promotion of health and wellness in the communities we all share.

Our charitable and non-profit support is directed toward programs and organizations that support healthy active living, with specific emphasis on encouraging physical activity in children, youth and their families, all in a non-competitive setting.

We focus on areas where we feel we can make a meaningful impact and where we have a significant presence. We strive to be involved with programs and initiatives that meet a compelling community need that does not duplicate existing services or programs.

With over 30 research, development and technology facilities worldwide, Nestlé has the largest R&D network of any food company. Nestlé’s research, development and technology network, together with local market application groups, employs over 5,000 people.

Nestlé further strengthens its R&D capability through Innovation Partnerships at each stage of the product development process – from early stage collaborations with start up and biotech companies to late stage partnerships with its key suppliers.

By bringing together all of its global R&D resources, Nestlé is able to provide high quality, safe food solutions for consumers worldwide – whether this is in terms of nutrition, health, wellness, taste, texture or convenience. Above all, Nestlé brings to consumers products that are of the highest quality. And safety is non-negotiable.

R&D is also critical in ensuring regulatory compliance of all Nestlé products. Nestlé is able to launch new products quickly and efficiently, in countries all over the world, by integrating regulatory affairs in all its R&D activities, from start to finish.

Nestlé scientists also play their part in communicating the health and wellness benefits of products to consumers. Nestlé nutritionists world-wide work to ensure that all nutrition communication, both on and off pack, is locally relevant, as well as scientifically sound.

Beyond sound nutrition, the future of foods will increasingly be driven by science. Nestlé scientists are looking ahead to the foods of the future. Nestlé R&D is translating nutrition and food science in two ways:

  • From consumer needs into research priorities.
  • From emerging science into consumer benefits, and services.

The vision of Nestlé R&D is long term. A glimpse of how Nestlé R&D is helping to shape the future of foods is provided through these internet pages. For more information on global R&D, please visit the R&D Newsroom.
