What is the Water Sustainability Act? Why is a price being placed on water?

In 2014, the government of British Columbia (B.C.) passed legislation – the Water Sustainability Act – to ensure the sustainability and availability of groundwater over the long term.

As part of this legislation, the government established rates for groundwater withdrawals in February 2015. This is intended to help authorize and manage groundwater use.

We fully support the Water Sustainability Act and agree that all water users should pay for the water they receive. We welcome the fee schedule review by the B.C. government and its continued requirement that all commercial users pay for their groundwater use.
