Celebrate National Coffee Day with a mug of sustainability

National Coffee Day 2016

This week, one of the world’s most beloved beverages gets not one, but two special days to celebrate its existence – Thursday, September 29 for National Coffee Day here in Canada and Saturday, October 1 for International Coffee Day around the world.

At Nestlé, we want to ensure that the beverage we love to enjoy is made in the best way possible – from our farmers to our consumers – which is why we have committed to continuously improving our green coffee supply chain through our Nescafé Plan.

The Nescafé Plan is a global initiative launched in 2010 to support the responsible farming, production, supply and consumption of coffee. Farmers who are part of the Nescafé Plan receive coffee plantlets and training in new techniques and water management to make coffee growing both more sustainable and profitable. We value coffee that’s made with respect for people and the environment.

Nescafé has a special responsibility to ensure that everyone gets to enjoy great tasting, affordable coffee – now and in the future. Our mission is to protect the future of coffee for those who enjoy drinking it, and those who make a living growing it. To turn this goal into reality, we’ve teamed up with the Rainforest Alliance, the Sustainable Agriculture Network (SAN), and the Common Code for the Coffee Community (4C) to ensure we are following internationally-recognised sustainability standards.

As part of the Nescafé Plan, we are working in many ways to reduce our environmental footprint. We are employing cleaner, natural refrigerants, converting waste into energy, using cleaner energy sources. Across the board, Nescafé is raising the standard of sustainable production at every stage of the coffee journey, from the coffee farm to the jar.
